New Delhi: Twelve states have utilized ₹22.8 crore from central funds to secure the release of poor prisoners unable to pay fines or furnish bail bonds, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The central government has earmarked ₹20 crore each for the financial years 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26 to support the release of prisoners who remain incarcerated despite completing their sentences due to unpaid fines or lack of bail security.
