Tuesday morning, eighteen coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail (Train number 12810) derailed near Rajkharsawan railway station in Jharkhand following a collision with a goods train. The accident has resulted in at least two fatalities and 20 injuries.

The derailment occurred around 3:45 am in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district, approximately 7 km from Rajkharsawan station, within the Chakradharpur railway division of South Eastern Railways.

Jharkhand Chief Minister,  Hemant Soren has directed officials to ensure the injured receive immediate medical attention. “Make immediate arrangements for the treatment of the injured,” he posted on X.

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee also addressed the incident, expressing frustration with the ongoing railway accidents. “I seriously ask: is this governance? This series of nightmares almost every week, this unending procession of deaths and injuries on railway tracks: for how long shall we tolerate this? Will there be no end to the callousness of the Government of India?” she posted on X (formerly Twitter).

According to a South Eastern Railway spokesperson, the derailment involved 18 of the train’s 22 coaches and occurred near Barabamboo station in SER’s Chakradharpur at 3:45 am.

In response to the incident, the Jharkhand government has dispatched emergency response teams to support rescue and relief operations. Indian Railways has also set up multiple helplines for affected passengers and their families across Tatanagar (Jamshedpur), Chakradharpur, Rourkela, Howrah, Mumbai, Nagpur, Ranchi, and other locations.
