NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed Parliament that approximately 79% of the India-Bangladesh border fencing has been completed, with work continuing on the remaining sections. According to a statement, around 864 km of the border still needs to be fenced, which includes 174.5 km of non-feasible gaps.

The challenges in completing the fencing project, as explained by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, include land acquisition issues, objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), limited working seasons, and difficult terrain such as landslides and marshy land.

In response to a query in the Lok Sabha, Rai also emphasized that India had communicated to the Bangladesh government its commitment to adhere to all protocols and agreements between the two countries, as well as between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the BGB, with regard to border security and fencing. “The Government of India has conveyed its expectation that all prior understandings will be fully implemented by Bangladesh, and that there will be a cooperative approach to addressing cross-border crimes,” Rai added.
