NYK, ClassNK, and IHI Power Systems have inked an MoU with the City of Yokohama to develop an ammonia-fuelled tugboat to operate in its port.

The signing of the MoU is part of the City of Yokohama’s to decarbonise port operations to develop a carbon neutral port.

The agreement is part of the Green Innovation Fund project within Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) for the development of vessels equipped with a domestically produced ammonia-fueled engine, which was adopted by NYK and IHI Power Systems in October last year.

The MoU covers acceptance of the ammonia-powered tug in the port of Yokohama, supply of fuel, and public relations with regard to environmental benefits.

“The parties will work in collaboration with City of Yokohama toward the development and demonstration of A-Tug (scheduled for fiscal 2024), promptly welcome environment-friendly vessels, and contribute to the realization of a carbon neutral society from the port of Yokohama,” NYK said.
