otterdam/Amsterdam, 8 June 2023 – Through in-depth code review, data analysis, and extensive experiments, Software Improvement Group (SIG) positively evaluated the necessary neutrality controls, confirming that the Routescanner routing system is neutral. Routescanner is an online route planner for container transport. Under the slogan ‘report, rethink, reduce’, the platform shows not only the fastest container routes but also the most sustainable ones in terms of carbon emissions.

Routescanner is growing as a trusted global player within the container logistics industry by creating efficiency through transparency. Central to Routescanner’s strength is a unique intelligent search algorithm for the optimal route, e.g. to reduce carbon emissions. It is important to provide assurance of its neutrality.

All results and data are open

In order to provide the necessary trust, SIG has thoroughly assessed the neutrality of the Routescanner routing system towards operators and ports. SIG positively evaluated the neutrality controls, confirming that the Routescanner routing system is neutral. One of the important neutrality controls is the provided transparency: all Routescanner results and source data are open for anyone to verify for correctness and neutrality.

SIG’s project leader of the assessment, Rob van der Veer, concludes: “Routescanner selects the best routing options only because they score the best on the optimization goal and not because certain operators or ports are involved.”

ISO standard on AI

Rob van der Veer is Senior director at Software Improvement Group and is closely involved in global and European research and standardization in AI. Rob is the lead author of the ISO/IEC 5338 standard on AI engineering and an advisor to many organizations including NCSC, ENISA and OWASP.
SIG is a global leader in independent software assessments and features an ISO/IEC 17025 certified software evaluation lab, with leading expertise in trustworthy algorithms.

“From the very beginning we have developed Routescanner on the values of trust and neutrality”, says Kevin Kruijthoff, Director of Product & Technology of Routescanner. “We are a strong believer in transparency, and in accordance with this, it is not more than logical to have our algorithms audited and verified by a neutral and trusted third party. As now users of all kinds can be even more sure that our optimizations will present them truly with the best results.”

The calculations have been accredited by the Global Logistics Emission Council. Shippers and freight forwarders from around the world use the online container transport platform to search for the most efficient and sustainable routes. In addition to major deepsea operators, virtually all inland shipping, rail and shortsea operators in Europe also share their commercial sailing and driving schedules on the platform. Routescanner now has more than 200 operators. Every day, Routescanner processes more than 750,000 schedules and its network includes more than 4,500 terminals worldwide. Routescanner was founded in 2021 and is based in Rotterdam. It employs twenty people.
