otterdam/Amsterdam, 8 June 2023 – Through in-depth code review, data analysis, and extensive experiments, Software Improvement Group (SIG) positively evaluated the necessary neutrality controls, confirming that the Routescanner routing system is neutral. Routescanner is an online route planner for container transport. Under the slogan ‘report, rethink, reduce’, the platform shows not only the fastest container routes but also the most sustainable ones in terms of carbon emissions.
Routescanner is growing as a trusted global player within the container logistics industry by creating efficiency through transparency. Central to Routescanner’s strength is a unique intelligent search algorithm for the optimal route, e.g. to reduce carbon emissions. It is important to provide assurance of its neutrality.

In order to provide the necessary trust, SIG has thoroughly assessed the neutrality of the Routescanner routing system towards operators and ports. SIG positively evaluated the neutrality controls, confirming that the Routescanner routing system is neutral. One of the important neutrality controls is the provided transparency: all Routescanner results and source data are open for anyone to verify for correctness and neutrality.
SIG’s project leader of the assessment, Rob van der Veer, concludes: “Routescanner selects the best routing options only because they score the best on the optimization goal and not because certain operators or ports are involved.”
ISO standard on AI
Rob van der Veer is Senior director at Software Improvement Group and is closely involved in global and European research and standardization in AI. Rob is the lead author of the ISO/IEC 5338 standard on AI engineering and an advisor to many organizations including NCSC, ENISA and OWASP.
