The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert on Sunday for an impending heatwave in several northern states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana.

Senior IMD scientist Naresh Kumar stated, “The maximum temperature in West Rajasthan’s Phalodi reached 51 degrees. The next 3-4 days will see similar temperatures in Rajasthan, prompting a Red Alert. A Red Alert has also been issued for Haryana. For Punjab, we have issued an Orange Alert for two days, followed by a Red Alert.”

Authorities have advised residents in affected areas to stay indoors during peak heat hours, remain hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities. These warnings aim to mitigate health risks and other challenges posed by the severe heatwave affecting northern and western India.

In contrast, the IMD has issued a heavy rain alert for Kerala until May 29, with a ‘yellow alert’ in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam districts.

The IMD forecasted thunderstorms in certain areas of Kerala on Sunday, accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph.

As a precaution, the IMD has warned fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until further notice. “Coastal residents are advised to relocate to safer areas,” the IMD added.

Additionally, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged fishermen to secure their fishing vessels and mechanized boats in harbors to prevent them from being carried away by strong winds and currents.

The IMD explained that a low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea is expected to cause heavy rainfall in Kerala until May 29. Residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather information and take necessary precautions for their safety during this period.
