During an engagement ceremony in Rajasthan’s Udaipur late Monday night, food poisoning led to the hospitalisation of 32 individuals and death of 4 people. After having dinner, guests felt sick at the ceremony and were rushed to nearby hospitals. The people from both the bride and groom’s side were the ones affected. The reason for the poisoning is under investigation at the moment. The deceased have been identified as Babu (50) from Bordi Khurd; Masru (40) from Bodla Vada; Amiyadevi (35), wife of Diva Pargi, from Savna Kyara and Dita (55). Their health declined rapidly leading to their demise. According to Ashok Kumar Singh, in- charge of Kotda police station, around 100 guests were in attendance at the ceremony. Following the dinner, a handful of them fell sick and sought help at the Kotda health centre.

According to chief medical and health officer (CMHO) Shankar Bamniya, Non- vegetarian food along with liquor was consumed by the guests. A few of them began vomiting and were taken to the Kotda medical centre, where 2 people were declared dead by the doctors. One of the deceased passed away on route to the hospital while the other died during treatment.

Investigations revealed that people who had consumed country liquor were more affected but the cause is still under investigation. Samples have been taken by the Food Safety Officer for the investigation. Local MLA and minister Babulal Kharadi and Udaipur collector Arvind Kumar Poswal visited the hospital on Tuesday.
