At least 25 people have died, and over 60 have been hospitalized after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district, officials reported on Thursday. Authorities fear the death toll may rise.
District collector MS Prasanth visited the Government Medical College Hospital, where the affected individuals are being treated.
Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his shock and sorrow over the incident, stating, “I was shocked and saddened to hear about the deaths caused by adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. Those responsible have been arrested, and action has been taken against officials who failed to prevent this tragedy.”
Stalin added, “If the public informs authorities about such crimes, immediate action will be taken. We will suppress these societal crimes with an iron fist.”
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi also extended his condolences and wished for the swift recovery of the hospitalized victims. In a statement from the Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan, he said, “I am deeply shocked by the loss of many lives in Kallakurichi due to counterfeit liquor consumption. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and speedy recovery to those in hospitals.”
Governor Ravi also expressed concern over the frequent reports of deaths due to illicit liquor across the state, stating, “The recurring incidents of deaths from spurious liquor reflect ongoing failures in curbing illicit alcohol production and consumption. This is a matter of serious concern.”
