NEW DELHI: In a significant policy change, the government will require all packaged commodities sold in the retail market to include detailed product information, regardless of their quantity. This includes details such as price, ingredients, place of origin, and key dates. Previously, only items in packages weighing up to 25 kg were subject to this requirement.
To circumvent this regulation, manufacturers and packers have been making packages slightly heavier than 25 kg, sources revealed.
“We have proposed amendments to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules and have made them available for public feedback until June 29. The plan is to extend the rule to all packaged items sold in the retail market. Packaged commodities intended for industrial and institutional consumers will be exempt from this provision,” an official stated.
Mandatory packaging norms are essential as they provide consumers with the necessary information to make informed purchasing decisions.
The department noted that the amendments will assist manufacturers, packers, and importers of packaged commodities of any quantity in making required declarations.
