Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is anticipated to deliver an address at the high-level UN General Assembly (UNGA) session on September 26, according to a provisional speakers list issued by the UN.

The 79th session of the UNGA is scheduled to run from September 24-30, with the general debate being a significant event during this period. The UN’s provisional list indicates that India’s “Head of Government” is set for an afternoon address on September 26. This schedule, however, may change as the UN updates attendance and speaking slots in the coming weeks.

Traditionally, Brazil will kick off the general debate as the first speaker on September 24, followed by the United States. US President, Joe Biden is expected to deliver his final address to global leaders from the UN podium before the US presidential election in November.

Prime Minister Modi, who recently began his historic third term, last spoke at the UNGA in September 2021. His forthcoming address will follow his visit to the UN headquarters in June of the previous year, where he led the Yoga Day commemoration before proceeding to Washington, DC for a State Visit hosted by President Biden.

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres will present his report before the General Debate starts, followed by an address by the President of the 79th session of the General Assembly. Guterres is also organizing the Summit of the Future at UN Headquarters, including action days on September 20-21 and a summit on September 22-23.

World leaders will gather at the United Nations to adopt the pact for the future, which incorporates a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes. “The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future,” stated the UN.

“Effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival but difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust, using outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities,” the UN added.

As the world prepares for this high-level week, the focus will be on fostering effective global cooperation and updating international structures to align with present-day realities. The General Debate and subsequent events are positioned as key platforms for driving these discussions.
