NEW DELHI: In an ongoing operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested two more policemen on Friday, continuing its crackdown on rampant corruption within the Delhi Police.
Officials said the accused officers, posted at the Sarita Vihar police station, were allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 35,000 from a complainant in a matrimonial dispute case.
The new arrests came just four days after CBI conducted raids at several police stations in the city and arrested four policemen, indicating that these actions had not deterred corrupt police personnel. The CBI registered a case against a sub-inspector and an assistant sub-inspector based on allegations that they demanded illegal gratification from the complainant in exchange for quashing an FIR pending against him.
The accused were identified as SI Raj Kumar and ASI Raghu Raj. Having laid a trap, CBI caught the two red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 35,000 from the complainant.
In his complaint, the victim claimed that he had a marital dispute with his wife, which led to an FIR being registered against him. Recently, he settled the dispute with his wife, and the couple was living together. However, the policemen started harassing them and threatened to book his wife for perjury if they requested the quashing of the FIR.
“The policemen threatened to request the judge to impose a heavy fine on my wife if they were not given the money they were demanding,” the complainant said. “My wife and I went to the police station on July 20, but we were told the investigating officer was out of the station. Later, I called him on WhatsApp, and he asked us to meet. He even issued a notice under Section 41A of the CrPC against my father and mother.”
The man added in his complaint, “I have recorded our conversation on WhatsApp and will produce it if required. I do not intend to pay any bribe to SI Raj Kumar. Kindly take legal action.”
CBI’s raids on Delhi Police personnel have become routine, even as the cops and police brass remain unfazed. Last week, the investigating agency conducted a raid in the Patparganj Industrial Area and arrested two head constables for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. In Hauz Khas, a sub-inspector was arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh. In another raid in Govindpuri, a head constable was apprehended.
