Heavy rain hit parts of the Capital on Tuesday morning, causing widespread waterlogging and prompting the Delhi Police to issue an advisory for commuters to avoid areas such as Nigambodh Ghat, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, Mangi Bridge, and Rohtak Road. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also warned that more rain was expected throughout the day.
In response to the waterlogging, the Delhi Traffic Police set up barricades at Minto Bridge and redirected traffic via DDU Marg and the Outer Circle of Connaught Place.
The IMD reported that while some areas received light, scattered rain, parts of north, southwest, west, central, and southeast Delhi experienced moderate to intense showers. Ridge Station in North Delhi recorded the highest rainfall, with 72.4 mm between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Other notable measurements included 57 mm in Pitampura, 45 mm at Delhi University, 39 mm in Mayur Vihar, 35 mm in Najafgarh, and 25.6 mm at Lodhi Road. Safdarjung, which represents Delhi’s overall weather, recorded 28.7 mm over three hours. An IMD official indicated that localized rain activity is expected to continue throughout the day.
The intense rainfall was attributed to the monsoon trough moving over Delhi, with southwesterly winds bringing moisture from the Arabian Sea into the trough. This interaction, combined with cold, dry air from a weak western disturbance, intensified the rainfall.
Traffic disruptions were reported at Najafgarh Phirni Road, Kashmere Gate, ISBT, Ashram, and ITO due to localized flooding.
Delhi has experienced rainfall on all days this month except August 3, marking an unusually wet August. The city has recorded 240.2 mm of rainfall so far this month, the highest for August since 2013, when it received 321.4 mm. The IMD predicts that scattered light rain will persist throughout the week.
