NEW DELHI: Actress Payel Mukherjee reported being attacked by a man on a bike in Kolkata on Saturday after her car allegedly touched his two-wheeler. The incident occurred in Southern Avenue, where the assailant shattered her car windows after she refused to roll them down.
Mukherjee claimed that the police quickly intervened, chasing the miscreant away. She shared the incident via a live video on social media, saying,
“I don’t come live often, but I have come here to show something…I am at Kolkata’s 27 Southern Avenue. This happens amid rallies taken across the city on the issue of women’s safety. Police have arrived at the spot and have chased away the miscreant. You can see his bike there…a lot of people are gathered here as well,” the actress said in a clip she posted on social media.
The Director General of Police (DGP) of South Kolkata confirmed the incident on X, stating, “This evening, a renowned Bengali actress live-streamed an incident of road traffic accident (RTA) and hooliganism at Southern Avenue. The on-duty police from Tollygunge Police Station swiftly intervened, and the accused person was arrested on the spot.”
The BJP’s West Bengal unit criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of creating a “nightmare for women” in Kolkata.
They tweeted, “Now Bengali actress Payel Mukherjee goes live fearing for her life while being abused and attacked by a bike-borne assailant right in Kolkata’s Southern Avenue. What has State Home Minister Mamata Banerjee reduced Kolkata to? A nightmare for women.”
