Home Minister Amit Shah will unveil four significant initiatives aimed at enhancing cyber safety and security on Tuesday. These initiatives include the establishment of a Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC), which will unite major banks, financial intermediaries, payment aggregators, telecom and IT service providers, and law enforcement agencies on a single platform for real-time action and collaboration against financial crimes.
The Home Ministry described CFMC as an example of “cooperative federalism” in law enforcement, with a mission to protect citizens’ finances from fraud.
During the foundation day celebration of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), Shah will also introduce the Samanvaya platform, a system designed to facilitate joint cybercrime investigations. The CFMC will serve as a comprehensive portal for cybercrime data, including data sharing, crime mapping, and coordination among law enforcement agencies (LEAs).
Another major initiative is the ‘cyber commandos program,’ which aims to establish specialized cyber units in states, Union territories, and Central police organizations. These trained cyber commandos will assist in safeguarding the digital domain and support LEAs and Central agencies in tackling cyber threats.
Lastly, Shah will inaugurate a suspect registry, based on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), in collaboration with banks and financial institutions. This registry is intended to bolster fraud risk management within the financial sector.
A Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson highlighted that these initiatives, guided by Amit Shah, represent a crucial step towards achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “cyber secure Bharat.”
The I4C was established on October 5, 2018, within the Cyber and Information Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, with the goal of national-level coordination to address cybercrime issues. The foundation day event will be attended by junior home ministers, the Union Home Secretary, the Director of Intelligence Bureau, state chief secretaries and DGPs, as well as senior officials from banks, fintech companies, and media, along with the newly trained cyber commandos.
