The father of a junior doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata has accused the West Bengal government of attempting to cover up the truth. He alleged that both the hospital and the department had conspired to obscure the real circumstances of his daughter’s death and expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigation.
More than a month after his daughter’s death, he remains troubled by unanswered questions regarding the case. He was quoted by The Indian Express expressing his frustration: “I can’t sleep; several questions have been bothering us. Who will answer them and when, if the government itself is only trying to downplay the incident and conceal the facts? Why should I not feel a conspiracy after this?”
The father further criticized the authorities, stating that the condition in which his daughter was found clearly indicated the nature of the crime. “Imagine being surrounded by doctors and police, who are supposed to be experts, and yet we were told she apparently committed suicide,” he said.
The victim’s family also accused the government of using the Durga Puja festivities as a distraction from the case. The father claimed, “After a month of our daughter’s death, the chief minister (Mamata Banerjee) is trying to divert attention from the case by urging everyone to focus on the festivities. This is a deliberate attempt to deflect scrutiny from the investigation.”
Additionally, the family alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the probe, suggested potential evidence tampering. The father expressed his expectations that the CBI would identify and take action against those involved in a larger conspiracy, including the college principal and others in her department.
The CBI has reported ongoing challenges in concluding the investigation and connecting all the elements that led to the crime.
