Lieutenant Commanders Roopa A and Dilna K are set to undertake a challenging global sailing expedition, ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama-II,’ following three years of intensive training. The duo will navigate the world aboard the indigenously built 56-foot sailing vessel INSV Tarini.

The voyage, expected to test their extreme skills, physical endurance, and mental fortitude, will see the officers leveraging their extensive sailing experience, accumulated through rigorous preparation. Navy spokesperson Captain Vivek Madhwal highlighted their training, which included mentorship from renowned circumnavigator Commander Abhilash Tomy (retd), a Kirti Chakra and Nao Sena Medal recipient.

Previously, Lt Commanders Roopa and Dilna were part of a six-member crew that completed a trans-oceanic journey from Goa to Rio de Janeiro, with stops in Cape Town. They also undertook a double-handed expedition from Goa to Port Blair and a sortie to Port Louis in Mauritius earlier this year.

Captain Madhwal noted that the Indian Navy’s efforts to rejuvenate sailing traditions underscore its commitment to maritime heritage and seamanship. Through sail training ships like INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini, and expeditions on INSV Mhadei and INSV Tarini, the Navy has reinforced its leadership in ocean sailing.
