KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for seven hours on Monday in connection with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Ghosh’s presence at the crematorium during the doctor’s last rites has raised questions, as the CBI had earlier accused the authorities of rushing the cremation despite the victim’s parents requesting a second autopsy. A group of junior doctors also questioned Ghosh’s presence at the hospital shortly after the crime.
They alleged that there were two other bodies scheduled for cremation before the victim’s, but her body was prioritized. Responding to these allegations, Ghosh stated that in postmortem cases, it is common practice to give precedence to such bodies. He explained that a crowd had started to gather at the crematorium, prompting the staff to cremate her first, following the wishes of her parents. He added that he was at the hospital because the victim resided in his constituency.
“Nirmal Ghosh was at the hospital, and we saw him at the crematorium as well. I had only informed former councillor Somnath De. When we reached the crematorium, we found her body lying in front of the funeral pyre,” the victim’s father said on Monday.
After his questioning at the CGO Complex, Ghosh stated, “Those who have tortured and murdered her will be punished under the state’s proposed death penalty law for rapists. Unfortunately, the focus has shifted away from ensuring justice for the victim, but we are committed to making sure she receives justice.”
