A guy in his late 50s was lynched in East Midnapore’s Patashpur on Sunday morning after villagers accused him of stripping a local woman and killing her by forcing her to drink poison.

Sukhchand Maity was pulled from his home and beaten with sticks and bamboo poles. Police rescued him from the throng and transported him to Egra Super Speciality Hospital, where he died.

Maity’s body was transported to Contai Sub-Divisional Hospital for autopsy.

There have been no arrests in any case.

The woman’s relatives alleged that on October 4, she went to pasture livestock in a field behind her house and was kidnapped by miscreants.

The accused allegedly stripped her, put poison in her mouth, and left.

The woman was discovered naked, frothing at the lips. She was rushed to a local hospital in severe condition and then transferred to a private nursing facility in Tamluk, where she died early Sunday.

The victim’s family member stated that Maity was a distant relative who resided close. The victim allegedly became aware of his unlawful relationship with a neighboring woman and was threatened several times over it.

Shubhendra Kumar, ASP (Rural) of Contai, stated: “According to the written complaint from the deceased woman’s family, she was beaten and forced to consume poison after discovering the accused’s illicit relationship.”

However, no allegations of rape have been made. The family of the accused, who died as a result of the mob’s thrashing, also filed a complaint. “Both are being investigated separately.”

Later in the day, the woman’s relatives declined to accept her body, citing dissatisfaction with the postmortem results. They want to file an application for a second autopsy before the Calcutta High Court this Monday.
