A group of junior doctors and students at RG Kar Medical College has been subjected to harsh penalties for serious misconduct, including extortion, intimidation, and sexual harassment, creating a hostile environment on campus. Following a thorough investigation, the special college council has taken action against 59 individuals, with all but six students facing campus bans ranging from six months to a year based on the severity of their offenses.
The council organized the 59 accused—comprised of 36 junior doctors and 23 students—into three categories depending on the seriousness of their actions. Sources indicate that the atmosphere of fear intensified after Sandip Ghosh assumed the role of principal in 2021. Notable figures in this scandal include house staff member Asish Pandey, who is currently in CBI custody, and senior resident Sourav Paul, both alleged to be key players in the misconduct.
Among those charged, ten individuals have been expelled from the college until further notice, as determined during a council meeting on Saturday. They face a range of allegations, including threatening fellow students, committing physical and mental abuse, and engaging in illegal activities. Their names will also be forwarded to the West Bengal Medical Council for a review of their medical registration status.
