KANPUR: Pragati Kharya, a 28-year-old PhD scholar at IIT-Kanpur (IIT-K), committed suicide in her dormitory room on Thursday, the fourth such incidence at the institute in the past year.
The deceased, Pragati Kharya, a Sanigawan resident in Kanpur, was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan, according to PTI, citing police sources.
Pragati was pursuing a doctorate in Earth Science. Because she did not attend morning courses, her friends contacted her several times, but she did not respond. Hostel occupants contacted the officials, who notified the police.
IIT Kanpur issued a statement expressing sympathy over Kharya’s unfortunate death, who had joined the institution in 2021.
“A police forensic team has arrived on campus to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. The Institute is waiting for the outcome of the police investigation to establish the cause. With Pragati Kharya’s death, the institute has lost a potential young researcher. “The institute extends its deepest condolences and prays for strength and comfort to her family and friends in this time of great loss,” the report stated, citing IIT Kanpur.
“The police received information about a PhD student’s suicide at around 12 p.m. today,” the source cited Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Rajesh Kumar Singh as saying.
