NEW DELHI: The father of a deceased trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing the family’s “tremendous mental pressure and helplessness.”
In an email, he stated, “I am the father of Abhaya and respectfully request an appointment with you at your convenience. Following the heinous incident involving our daughter, we have been overwhelmed with mental distress.” He emphasized his desire to discuss the situation and seek Shah’s guidance, highlighting the value of his insights.
The father further urged the Home Minister to spare a few minutes for a meeting, saying, “Please let me know when and where you can meet us. We appreciate your time and consideration and look forward to your favorable response.”
Earlier, the victim’s mother expressed hope for an appointment, intending to personally appeal for guidance in their quest for justice. “I am hopeful Amit Shah ji will give us some time to share the mental agony we’re enduring,” she said.
On August 9, the body of a female postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital, prompting junior doctors across West Bengal to protest for justice, demanding increased police presence in hospitals and the hiring of female officers. After 42 days of protests, they paused their demonstrations on September 21 following assurances from the state government, but resumed on October 5 due to unmet demands related to the incident.
The investigation, initially handled by Kolkata Police, was taken over by the CBI after a Calcutta High Court order. The CBI has arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, a suspended police officer, in connection with the case.
