New Delhi: Two people, including a Delhi Police constable, were killed when a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus lost control and ran over them near the Monastery Market in Delhi, police said on Tuesday. The accident occurred on Monday night after the bus, which was operating on the Sarai Kale Khan to Nand Nagari route, suffered a technical malfunction.
The bus mounted the pavement, collided with a billboard pole, and then struck the two men before crashing into a road divider on Ring Road. There were no passengers onboard at the time of the incident, except for a DTC duty officer, as the bus had reportedly broken down earlier.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Raja Banthia, the incident took place around 10:38 pm. “The Police Control Room received multiple calls reporting that the bus had swerved off the road near Monastery Market, causing significant damage and critically injuring two individuals,” Banthia said.
One of the victims, Delhi Police Constable Victor, a resident of Nagaland, was on night patrol duty at the time of the accident. He had left the Civil Lines police station at 9:45 pm and was riding a PCR motorcycle when the bus hit him. He was rushed to Parmanand Hospital in Civil Lines, but doctors declared him dead on arrival due to severe head, neck, and facial injuries. Constable Victor had been posted at the Civil Lines police station since June 2023.
The second victim, a man whose identity is still being verified, was also critically injured and declared dead at the hospital.
The bus driver, Vinod Kumar, a resident of Ghazipur, was taken into custody by the police. He was unharmed in the incident and has been employed with DTC as a driver since 2010.
Authorities are continuing efforts to identify the second victim, while investigations into the cause of the technical malfunction that led to the accident are ongoing.
