CHENNAI: Chennai and surrounding regions are bracing for heavy rainfall on Wednesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a weather warning for the city and 11 other districts in Tamil Nadu. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), heavy rain is expected to persist in Chennai and nearby areas through Friday.

The IMD has forecast isolated heavy showers across several districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, and Villupuram, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.

In response to the severe weather conditions, district collectors in many affected areas have declared a school holiday for November 13, 2024. Unconfirmed reports suggest that schools may also be closed in districts such as Cuddalore, Karaikal, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, and Perambalur, following heavy rainfall on November 12 and continuing into the morning of November 13.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for several districts, with warnings extending across 12 districts on November 12, 17 districts on November 13, 27 districts on November 14, and 25 districts on November 15. This weather event is linked to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to move towards Tamil Nadu or Sri Lanka in the coming days.
