DEHRADUN: Six students were killed in a tragic road accident in Dehradun early Tuesday morning, but their families have yet to file a formal complaint with the police, delaying the registration of a case. Authorities are seeking legal advice on potential next steps, as initial investigations suggest the truck driver may not be at fault, The Times of India reported.
Inspector KC Bhatt from the Cantt police station confirmed that no complaints have been lodged by the victims’ families, which is necessary for the police to proceed with case registration. “We have not received any complaint from the family members of the victims that could warrant case registration,” Bhatt said.
The deadly crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. at ONGC Chowk, when a speeding Innova car collided with the rear of a container truck. The force of the crash left the car in a mangled state, killing six passengers—three men and three women, all under the age of 25. A seventh passenger, Siddhesh Agrawal, 25, survived but remains in critical condition.
According to Circle Officer (City) Neeraj Semwal, the six deceased died instantly at the scene. Agrawal, who was critically injured, is being treated at Synergy Hospital and is reportedly stable, though he remains unable to provide a statement due to a severe head injury.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the truck driver was not at fault. The collision occurred when the speeding Innova struck the truck’s rear left side, a known blind spot for large vehicles. “Since the car’s young owner, who was driving, died in the crash, he cannot be held accountable under the law. The police are consulting with legal experts to determine the next course of action,” said Inspector Bhatt.
The victims, five of whom were from Dehradun and one from Chamba, were reportedly on a late-night drive when the accident occurred. CCTV footage reviewed by police shows the car was moving at a normal speed while passing through areas like Rajpur Road, Saharanpur Chowk, Balliwala, and Ballupur. However, as it neared ONGC Chowk, the car unexpectedly accelerated, leading to the crash.
Police are still investigating the incident and await further action based on the families’ formal complaints.
