JHANSI: Three infants, who had survived the devastating fire at Maharani Laxmibai Medical College’s special newborn care unit last Friday, succumbed to health complications, raising the death toll from the blaze to 12.
Three Babies Die of Complications After Fire
The three infants, aged just a few days old, passed away between Tuesday night and Wednesday evening. According to sources at the hospital, the babies’ deaths were due to health issues unrelated to the fire itself. The surviving infants were being treated for various complications, and doctors said these conditions were not directly linked to the blaze.
Health Conditions of Deceased Infants
One of the deceased was a premature baby weighing only 1.2 kg, who had been diagnosed with hypotension (low blood pressure). Another baby died from a severe infection and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a condition that causes abnormal blood clotting. The third infant, also born premature and weighing 1.2 kg, died of respiratory failure and shock.
Fire Casualties and Efforts to Save Newborns
Of the 54 infants in the special care unit at the time of the fire, 10 tragically died from suffocation or burns, while the remaining infants were rescued. The two additional infant deaths later brought the total number of fatalities to 12.
Ongoing Investigation and Treatment Efforts
Dr. Narendra Singh Senger, the principal of the medical college, confirmed that the survivors are being closely monitored and treated for various health complications as investigations into the fire continue.
