GURGAON: A woman and her six-year-old son were robbed at gunpoint by a BluSmart cab driver in Gurgaon, who forced her to transfer ₹55,000 via UPI before fleeing the scene. The driver, identified as Sonu Singh, was arrested on Sunday.

The incident occurred on the evening of November 29. The 30-year-old woman and her son boarded the cab from Airia Mall in Sector 68, heading to their apartment in Sector 86. As they neared Sector 83, about 2 km from their destination, the driver stopped the vehicle. “He pulled over and pointed a gun at us, demanding I transfer ₹55,000 via UPI after checking my account balance,” the woman stated in her police complaint.

Following the incident, an FIR was filed at Kherki Daula police station under IPC section 309(4) and section 25 of the Arms Act. According to police, after extorting the money, the driver seized the woman’s suitcase, ordered them out of the car, and drove away.

Investigators reviewed cab booking details, UPI transaction records, and CCTV footage, which led to the identification of Sonu Singh, a resident of Kohta village in Uttar Pradesh’s Jalaun district. He was arrested from his residence in Badha, Gurgaon, on Sunday night and appeared in court on Monday, where he was remanded to police custody.

Manesar DCP Deepak Kumar Jewaria said, “The accused worked in Gujarat for several years before moving to Gurgaon. He is being interrogated to recover the stolen money and the firearm. We are also investigating if he has a prior criminal record.”

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with one user, Samir Ahmed, posting, “One of our family friend’s wife and her 6-year-old child were robbed at gunpoint in your cab. The mental trauma was unbearable. The driver even threatened to slit the child’s throat.”

BluSmart issued a statement addressing the incident: “The company immediately assisted law enforcement authorities, leading to the driver’s arrest within 24 hours. This swift action was possible due to our active records of driver partners, including background checks and address verification. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of our customers and are in constant touch with the affected family and authorities to provide full support.”

The company added that it will continue to cooperate with the investigation to ensure justice is served.
