NEW DELHI: The PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation) platform has accelerated the execution of over 340 infrastructure projects valued at more than ₹17.3 lakh crore ($205 billion) by June 2023, according to a study by Oxford University. The report underscores how India’s use of digital tools and collaborative governance has set a model for other emerging economies to follow.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, PRAGATI is a web-based platform designed to monitor the progress of key infrastructure projects and central government schemes. The study, titled “From Gridlock to Growth,” emphasizes that India’s approach to fast-tracking large-scale infrastructure initiatives offers valuable insights for global leaders aiming to leverage infrastructure for economic development.

Key Findings and Impact

The Oxford study highlighted that PRAGATI has facilitated the completion of several delayed projects, some stalled for up to 20 years. By fostering coordination across all levels of government, the platform has streamlined decision-making and removed bureaucratic bottlenecks.

“The success of PRAGATI shows how digital governance can transform infrastructure development into a catalyst for economic growth,” the report stated.

High-Level Review Mechanism

The platform’s meetings are chaired by the Prime Minister and attended by Union government secretaries and state chief secretaries. To date, the Prime Minister has presided over 44 PRAGATI meetings, reviewing 355 projects with a combined value exceeding ₹18 lakh crore.

PRAGATI’s effectiveness in expediting critical infrastructure development highlights India’s commitment to using technology and efficient governance to drive economic progress, positioning it as a benchmark for other nations.
