NEW DELHI: In a shocking case that has gripped the capital, 20-year-old Delhi University student Arjun Tanwar has been arrested for the brutal murder of his father, a retired Army officer, his mother, and his sister at their Neb Sarai home. The murders were committed early Wednesday, the day of his parents’ wedding anniversary, and stemmed from deep-seated resentment fueled by property disputes and familial discord.
According to police, Arjun meticulously planned the crime and attempted to mislead authorities by feigning innocence. Investigators revealed that Arjun believed his father, Rajesh Kumar (51), intended to transfer the family property to his sister Kavita (23). This belief, coupled with his father’s disapproval of Arjun’s boxing career and repeated public humiliation, drove him to murderous rage.
“He admitted to slitting their throats to silence them. He was so enraged with his father that he even stabbed him in the head,” police stated.
Deception and Discovery
To maintain the illusion of normalcy, Arjun followed his usual routine, leaving the house for an early morning run at 5:30 am. Upon returning, he rushed to his gym and informed the owner that his parents had been murdered. He then alerted neighbors and relatives, trying to divert suspicion.
However, police soon uncovered inconsistencies in his story. “During questioning, Arjun’s responses were contradictory,” said Sanjay Kumar Jain, Joint Commissioner of Police (South).
The Grisly Crime Scene
The crime scene painted a horrific picture. Rajesh’s body was found upstairs, while his wife Komal (46) and daughter Kavita were discovered in separate rooms on the ground floor. All three had their throats slit, with additional stab wounds. Clothing had been placed around their necks, seemingly in an attempt to stem the bleeding.
Arjun began the attack with his sister, who fought back, as evidenced by the defensive wounds on her body. He then attacked his father in his sleep before ambushing his mother as she exited the bathroom.
A Boxer Driven by Grudge
Arjun, a political science student and trained boxer who had won a silver medal representing Delhi, harbored a deep grudge against his family. He resented his father for favoring his sister, who was pursuing a master’s degree, and for constantly criticizing his studies and routine.
“Arjun felt neglected and isolated,” police revealed. He also suspected that his father intended to hand over the family property to his sister. Tensions reached a boiling point during his sister’s birthday on December 1, when Rajesh reportedly assaulted him again, further intensifying Arjun’s fury.
Investigating Digital Clues
Authorities are now scrutinizing Arjun’s digital devices to determine if he sought online guidance to carry out the crime. The investigation, led by ACP Abhinendra Jain, has exposed the devastating consequences of unchecked resentment, resulting in the destruction of an unsuspecting family.
