JAMMU: In a tragic incident, a policeman allegedly shot and killed his colleague with an AK-47 assault rifle before turning the weapon on himself in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district early Sunday, officials reported.
The two policemen, along with another colleague, were traveling from north Kashmir’s Sopore to the Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) in Talwara, Reasi district, when the incident occurred. Their bullet-riddled bodies were discovered inside a police van near the Kali Mata temple in Udhampur’s Rehambal area around 6:30 AM.
According to officials, the head constable shot the driver following an argument and then ended his own life.
A third officer, a selection-grade constable who was also in the vehicle, escaped unhurt and is currently being questioned as part of the investigation.
Udhampur SSP Amod Ashok Nagpure confirmed the use of the AK-47 rifle in the shooting, stating, “They were posted in Sopore and belonged to Kashmir. The accused constable shot his colleague before killing himself. Initial findings suggest it is a case of fratricide and suicide.”
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about stress and mental health issues among security personnel in conflict-prone regions.
