NEW DELHI: Vehicle retail sales across all categories in India saw an 11.2% growth in November, with total units sold rising to 32,08,719 compared to 28,85,317 in the same month last year, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The growth was primarily driven by strong demand for two-wheelers.

Two-wheeler retail sales grew 15.8%, reaching 26,15,953 units compared to 22,58,970 in November 2023, buoyed by a festive season spillover. However, passenger vehicle (PV) sales declined sharply, down 13.7% to 3,21,943 units from 3,73,140 units in the corresponding period last year.

Mixed Performance Across Segments

FADA president C. S. Vigneshwar highlighted the divergent trends, stating, “While November was initially expected to build on prior momentum, particularly due to the marriage season, dealer feedback suggests the segment underperformed expectations.” He added that while rural markets provided some support for two-wheelers, marriage-related sales remained subdued.

In the PV segment, weak consumer sentiment, limited product variety, and a lack of significant new launches were cited as reasons for the decline. Dealers expressed concern over the tepid response, which dampened hopes for robust growth during the season.

The November numbers underscore the varied challenges and opportunities within the auto sector, as festive demand continues to bolster some segments while others face headwinds.
