CHENNAI: A first-level flood warning has been issued for families living near the Adyar River and villages around Chembarambakkam Lake, as 1,000 cusecs of water are set to be released from the lake starting at 8 a.m. on Friday. The affected areas include Sirukalathur, Kavanur, Kundrathur, Thirumudivakkam, Vazhuthiyambedu, and Thiruneermalai.
As of 6 a.m., the lake’s water level had risen to 23.29 feet, just 0.71 feet below its full capacity of 24 feet, with a total storage of 3,453 million cubic feet.
Authorities have cautioned that the water release volume may be increased as inflows are expected to rise due to ongoing rainfall in the lake’s catchment areas. The measure aims to regulate water levels and mitigate the risk of flooding along the Adyar River, according to officials from the Water Resources Department.
Chembarambakkam Lake, an essential water source for Chennai, spans 25.51 square kilometers and is situated in Kundrathur Taluk of Kanchipuram District.
