NEW DELHI: Two individuals were arrested, and seven, including the principal, director, and chairman of a private engineering college in Medchal near Hyderabad, were booked after female students accused staff of secretly filming them in hostel washrooms.
The incident came to light following student protests on January 1 and 2. Police detained two 20-year-old suspects, one of whom worked as a kitchen assistant. Both were remanded to judicial custody on Saturday.
According to the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate, the accused specifically targeted female hostel residents, exploiting their proximity to the washrooms. Their accommodation near the hostel allowed easy access, compromising the privacy and security of underage victims.
Authorities revealed that hostel wardens acted negligently when victims reported the incidents, opting not to inform the police or parents. Instead, the college administration allegedly pressured the wardens to suppress the matter to protect the institution’s reputation, enabling the suspects to continue their activities.
A case has been filed against seven individuals, including the principal, for failing to act responsibly. The investigation is ongoing.
