NEW DELHI: Central government employees who donate their organs are eligible for up to 42 days of special casual leave, according to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).
Dr. Anil Kumar, Chief of NOTTO, stated that the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has already issued the relevant orders, which have been published on the NOTTO website to raise awareness.
Organ donation involves major surgery, necessitating significant recovery time, including hospitalisation and post-hospitalisation care. As a special welfare measure, the DoPT order grants up to 42 days of leave to central government staff who choose to donate organs.
The leave applies irrespective of the type of surgery performed for organ removal. The order specifies that the leave should typically be taken in one stretch starting from the day of hospital admission. However, in certain cases, it may commence up to one week before surgery, provided it is recommended by a government-registered medical practitioner.
A living donor can contribute a kidney, a portion of the pancreas, or part of the liver, as these organs can sustain body functions or regenerate after donation.
