NEW DELHI: The Railways has constituted a high-level inquiry committee, led by the principal chief safety officer (PCSO), to investigate the Jalgaon train tragedy, describing it as an “unusual incident” of a train run-over. According to sources, since the incident occurred outside the train and was not related to technical issues, a probe by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) is deemed unnecessary.
The five-member committee includes the principal chief security commissioner and principal chief engineers from the electrical, mechanical, and commercial departments of the Central Zone. Officials stated that the investigation will examine all aspects of the incident, with the committee expected to submit its findings promptly.
There are unconfirmed reports suggesting the presence of smoke, but its source remains unclear. The Railway Ministry clarified that no sparks or smoke were detected from any part of the train’s coach. “We are investigating who spread the rumour and what led passengers to disembark from the train,” said an official.
Preliminary reports indicate that panic broke out among passengers aboard the Pushpak Express following a rumour of a fire. Many passengers alighted from the train and waited on adjacent tracks, where they were tragically struck by the speeding Karnataka Express.
The Railways has assured a thorough inquiry to determine the cause of the incident and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
