NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the United States on Wednesday (local time) for a two-day visit, at the invitation of US President Donald Trump.
“Landed in Washington DC a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting @POTUS Donald Trump and strengthening the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Our nations will continue to work closely for the benefit of our people and a brighter future for our planet,” PM Modi wrote in a post on X.
Despite the chilly weather, members of the Indian diaspora gathered outside Blair House to welcome the Prime Minister, who acknowledged their presence with warm greetings.
During his stay, PM Modi will be residing at Blair House, located at 1651 Pennsylvania Avenue, directly across from the White House. This prestigious 70,000-square-foot residence has hosted numerous distinguished guests, including presidents, royalty, and world leaders, earning its reputation as a top-tier diplomatic residence. Blair House serves as an essential venue for diplomatic relations and international discussions, acting as an extension of the White House.
Before his departure, PM Modi expressed that the visit would further strengthen the existing ties between India and the US and establish new areas of cooperation.
In a statement before his departure, PM Modi said, “Although this will be our first meeting since his historic election victory and inauguration in January, I fondly recall working together during his first term to build a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the US.”
“This visit will provide an opportunity to build on the successes of our collaboration during his first term and to set a new agenda to deepen our partnership, particularly in areas like technology, trade, defence, energy, and supply chain resilience. We will work together for the benefit of our two nations and shape a better future for the world,” he added.
Since November 2024, the two leaders have had two phone conversations. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended Trump’s inauguration, later meeting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and participating in the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ meeting in January 2025.
Following his three-day visit to France, PM Modi met with US Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday (local time). Their discussions focused on shared interests, including the possibility of US support for India’s energy diversification through investments in clean, reliable US nuclear technology, as per a White House statement.
