Bengaluru police are set to bolster their traffic enforcement efforts using Artificial Intelligence to tackle the rising number of violations across the city. According to a report by Money Control, AI will now be used to identify and penalize motorists for 13 different types of violations.
The AI cameras will monitor offenses such as speeding, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing helmets or seat belts, running red lights, stop line violations, and carrying three riders on two-wheelers. Additionally, they will now detect six new violations, including illegal number plates, wrong-side driving, overloading in goods vehicles, broken mirrors, and illegal parking.
The integration of AI into traffic management is expected to significantly increase the number of enforcement actions in the tech hub. In 2023 alone, Bengaluru Traffic Police reportedly filed 89.9 lakh cases and collected nearly ₹190 crore in fines. Currently, there are 330 AI cameras operational at 90 key junctions, monitoring vehicles around the clock.
On the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, 60 cameras have been installed specifically to catch speeding vehicles. These cameras automatically generate traffic challans for those exceeding speed limits. Within just two weeks of their installation, approximately 12,000 violations were recorded, with challans sent directly to the mobile phones of vehicle owners. Police have urged commuters to adhere strictly to traffic rules on this first expressway in South India.
