DHAKA: The Jatiya Nagorik Party (JNP), a newly formed political group led by students, has called for a complete overhaul of Bangladesh’s governance system, including a new constitution.
Speaking on Tuesday, JNP convenor Md Nahid Islam emphasized that simply changing the government would not be enough to build a new Bangladesh.
“To truly serve the people and establish a genuine democracy, we must reform both the governance structure and the constitution. Only then can we ensure justice, equality, and democracy,” Islam stated.
His remarks came after JNP’s first official program, where he paid tribute to Liberation War martyrs at the National Memorial Mausoleum.
Vision for a “Second Republic”
Islam outlined JNP’s long-term objective of creating a “Second Republic”, arguing that this would require a new constituent assembly and a new constitution.
“The struggles between 1947 and 2024 reflect the people’s aspirations for a truly democratic state. To realize this vision, we must lay the foundation of a new republic through a new constitution,” he said.
Currently, JNP is focused on expanding its grassroots presence and meeting the requirements for official party registration.
Call for Accountability
Islam also demanded justice for political killings over the last 15 years, urging legal action against those responsible.
“The Awami League’s political legacy must be judged through the judicial system of Bangladesh,” he declared.
As JNP gains momentum, its push for constitutional reform signals a growing movement for political transformation in Bangladesh.
