KOLKATA: The West Bengal Medical Council has decided to cancel the medical registration of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, after he failed to respond to a showcause notice issued on September 7. The notice requested Ghosh to explain why his registration should not be revoked and required a response within three days. Currently incarcerated, Ghosh has not addressed the allegations of various irregularities against him.
The council had stated that failure to respond or provide a satisfactory explanation could result in the cancellation of his registration. WBMC registrar Manas Chakraborti confirmed that Ghosh’s registration would be revoked “by Thursday.”
Previously, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) of West Bengal urged the WBMC to take immediate action to cancel Ghosh’s registration. In a letter to WBMC president Sudipta Roy, IMA officials expressed concern over the delay, stating, “The entire medical fraternity wants to know why, despite non-compliance, his medical registration number hasn’t been revoked as per constitutional provisions.”
In addition to Ghosh’s situation, the council’s president, Sudipta Roy, is currently under investigation by the CBI and ED, with raids taking place on Wednesday.
Furthermore, the Service Doctors’ Forum has called for the dissolution of the WBMC, citing corruption allegations against its leaders, including Roy and vice-president Sushanta Roy. Forum representatives Sajal Biswas and Durgarasad Chakraborty highlighted alleged rigging in the 2022 WBMC elections and demanded accountability from the council’s top officials.
Following the RG Kar incident, at least five council members have resigned, expressing concerns over the council’s credibility. Ghosh himself is among the council members alongside Avik De and Birupaksha Biswas.
