The China State Shipbuilding Corp. (CSSC) and the French shipping company CMA CGM struck a deal in Beijing this week for 16 container ships for 21 billion yuan ($3.06 billion), breaking the record for the largest single purchase in Chinese shipbuilding history.
The agreement calls for 12 dual-fuel methanol container ships with a capacity of four dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) container ships and 15,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) with a capacity of 23,000 TEUs.
Methanol ships are 366 metres long and 51 metres wide, with a cargo capacity of 156,000 tons, whereas LNG ships are 399.9 metres long and 61.3 metres wide, with a cargo capacity of 220,000 tonnes.
According to the CSTC, CMA CGM has ordered over 70 high-value added boats driven by green fuel from CSSC over the last decade, including the world’s first LNG-powered 23,000 TEUs container ship.
