NEW DELHI: Security measures have been tightened in Delhi for Muharram processions on Wednesday. Officials have implemented extensive arrangements to ensure the safety and smooth execution of processions throughout the city.
The Delhi Traffic Police released an advisory for the Muharram processions, highlighting major routes and areas affected, including Jama Masjid, Chawri Bazar, Okhla, Kamra Bangash, Mehrauli, Old Police Chowki, and Nizamuddin.
From Wednesday afternoon until night, the movement of city buses will be restricted and regulated on certain routes.
Similarly, detailed arrangements have been made for Muharram observances in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. “Twelve companies of the Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed as part of the security measures. “We are also monitoring the situation via drones, and our media cell is keeping an eye on social media to ensure no rumours are spread,” said Lucknow Joint CP (Law and Order) Kirit Rathod on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, a rare traditional Muharram procession took place at the world-famous Dal Lake in Srinagar on the eve of Ashura, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. Similarly, people in Mumbai’s Dongri area participated in a Muharram Tazia procession.
Earlier this year, the All-India Shia Personal Law Board requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure adequate security arrangements for the Muharram processions. The board appealed to the Prime Minister to ensure security on the routes determined by the state governments to prevent unruly elements from disturbing law and order.
