Ten years after a 22-year-old student from Bengaluru’s Frazer Town was kidnapped, assaulted, and raped in a car, a city court this week convicted and sentenced five men to six months to fourteen years in prison.
Nasir Hyder, also known as Nasir, was convicted of kidnapping and rape on October 21, and the extra city civil and sessions court sentenced him to 14 years in prison. He’s the son of a local politician.
His accomplice, Shafeeq Ahmed, was sentenced to ten years in prison, while co-conspirators Shoyeb and Hafeez were sentenced to one year apiece, and Mohammed Ishq Soudh was sentenced to six months. The survivor and her buddy, the son of a Bengaluru restaurateur, were Mangaluru college students visiting Bengaluru on vacation in July 2014.
On the night of July 10, the couple dined out with friends, and the woman’s friend volunteered to drive her home. When they arrived about midnight, the two sat in the car and talked. Around 12.15 a.m., a Skoda Fabia pulled alongside the automobile. The occupants asked the survivor to get out of the vehicle.
Sensing danger, she attempted to flee into her apartment building, but was stopped by the group and forced to get into their vehicle.
Her male companion was also forced into the vehicle. Nasir sexually raped the victim during the hour-long journey from one location to another in the automobile. The car came to a halt at the side of a railroad track, and the survivor’s friend was hauled out. Nasir then raped the woman, telling her not to resist unless she wanted her buddy dead. Her trauma lasted 15 minutes before the gang released her and the college mate.
