NEW DELHI: Five terrorists were killed during an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Thursday.

Officials reported that two security personnel sustained injuries during the operation. The encounter began after security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation on Wednesday night in the Kadder area of Behli Bagh, following intelligence inputs about the presence of suspected terrorists.

According to authorities, the situation escalated into a gunfight when the terrorists opened fire on the security forces, prompting retaliation. “Encounter started in Kadder area of Kulgam district. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” the J&K Police posted on X.

The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps also shared details, stating that the terrorists fired a “heavy volume” of gunfire when challenged. “OP KADER, Kulgam. Based on specific intelligence input regarding the presence of terrorists, a Joint Operation was launched by the Indian Army and J&K Police at Kadder, Kulgam. Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops, and on being challenged, terrorists opened indiscriminate and heavy fire. Own troops effectively retaliated. Operation is in progress,” the Corps posted on X.

Recent weeks have seen heightened security operations against terrorists following several attacks in the region.

On December 3, a terrorist identified as Junaid Ahmed Bhat was killed during an ongoing operation in Srinagar district. Police noted that Bhat was involved in multiple attacks, including the killing of civilians in Gagangir, Ganderbal, and other areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to chair a high-level security meeting in New Delhi on December 19, according to sources.
