NEW DELHI: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a forest fire advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, warning of potential risks in the coming week. Authorities across several districts in the Kashmir Valley have been instructed to take precautionary measures and prepare for any emergencies.
In an official communication from the office of the Kashmir divisional commissioner, deputy commissioners from 10 districts were directed to raise awareness among residents in fire-prone areas.
“It is essential to educate communities about the heightened fire risk and ensure proactive steps are taken to mitigate incidents,” the letter emphasized.
The advisory urged people to remain vigilant, avoid activities involving open flames, and report any signs of fire immediately.
Field staff, forest workers, and emergency responders have been placed on high alert. “All forest staff and local authorities must be fully prepared with fire-fighting equipment and ready to respond swiftly if needed,” the letter further stated.
The warning follows reports of multiple forest fire incidents in the region last year.
Jammu and Kashmir’s total forest cover spans 20,194 square kilometers, with 12,066 square kilometers in Jammu and 8,128 square kilometers in Kashmir. The Ladakh Union Territory accounts for an additional 36 square kilometers.
The region’s forest composition includes 1,075 square kilometers of Deodar, 1,825 square kilometers of Chir, 1,969 square kilometers of Kail, 3,401 square kilometers of Fir, and 10,075 square kilometers of other types.
Authorities are now prioritizing swift action to protect the region’s forests and ensure the safety of its residents.
