In a tragic series of events, four people died in separate road accidents in Chandigarh and Mohali over a 48-hour period.

In Chandigarh, two pedestrians were fatally struck by two-wheelers on Monday. Sarwan, 54, from Kaimbwala village, was hit near the Kaimbwala turn, while Vinod Kumar from EWS Colony, Dhanas, was struck by an unidentified motorcycle near a wine shop in Dhanas.

The driver in Sarwan’s case, 20-year-old Juber Ali from Jhampur Govind Nagar, was arrested at the scene and charged under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(2) (causing death by negligent driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He was later released on bail. Kumar was taken to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. A case against the unidentified motorcyclist has been filed under Sections 281, 125A (endangering life), and 106(1) (causing death by negligent act) at the Sarangpur police station, but no arrests have been made yet.

These incidents have raised alarm about pedestrian safety in Chandigarh. According to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ 2022 report, the city recorded 46 pedestrian accidents, with 23 resulting in fatalities, contributing to a total of 83 road deaths that year.

In Mohali, a man and woman lost their lives when their Ford Endeavour collided with a tractor trailer on the Kharar-Desu Majra flyover late Monday evening. The victims were identified as Ajay Kumar, 32, and Sonia Saini, 39, both from Rupnagar.

Ajay’s cousin, Manish Kumar, 37, reported that he had met them around 11 pm for work. Following them in his car, he witnessed their vehicle crash into a zig-zagging tractor trailer on the flyover. Upon checking on his cousin and Sonia, Manish found them unconscious and bleeding. He rushed them to Kharar civil hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Sub-inspector Beer Chand noted that the tractor trailer driver fled the scene but was later apprehended. The driver has been charged under Sections 281, 106(1), and 324(4) (causing mischief with significant financial loss) of the BNS at the Kharar city police station.

In the first half of this year, Mohali recorded 275 accidents, resulting in 154 fatalities and 350 injuries.
