NEW DELHI: On Sunday, the government removed the two bills related to One Nation, One Election (ONOE) from its revised list of business for Monday in the Lok Sabha. Sources later confirmed that the two significant bills will now be introduced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in the Lower House on Tuesday.

The two bills—the Constitution 129th Amendment Bill and the UTs Law Amendment Bill—were initially scheduled for tabling on Monday. However, the revised agenda replaced them with the Readjustment of Representation of STs in Assembly Constituencies of Goa Bill, also listed under Meghwal’s name.

Sources pointed to the absence of Home Minister Amit Shah, who is currently on a two-day trip to Chhattisgarh, as the reason for deferring the ONOE bills. Shah is expected to be present in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The government has other key legislative matters lined up for Monday, including supplementary demands for grants and the Appropriation Bill. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha will begin a discussion on the Constitution.

Once the two ONOE bills, cleared by the cabinet on Thursday, are introduced in the Lok Sabha, they are likely to be referred to a joint parliamentary committee in order to foster broader consensus, as the government currently lacks the two-thirds majority required to pass the bills.
