A third-year Computer Science student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead in his hostel room on Monday. The student, from Uttar Pradesh, was discovered in his room at the Brahmaputra Hostel. Police have launched an investigation, and the body has been sent for a postmortem examination.
This incident marks the fourth student death at IIT Guwahati this year. On August 9, a female student was reportedly found hanging in her room.
Following the news, a group of students gathered in front of the administration building, calling for justice for the deceased and demanding enhanced mental health support for the student community. Protesters claimed the student had been struggling with physical health issues and mental distress, and alleged that his medical documentation had been disregarded, exacerbating his depression.
The dean of students’ welfare engaged with the protesting students and assured them that the well-being of IIT Guwahati’s students is a top priority. A spokesperson for the institute expressed deep sorrow over the loss, offering condolences to the student’s family and reaffirming the institute’s commitment to providing support and resources.
“IITG is deeply saddened to report the loss of a student from our community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the spokesperson stated.
