International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez will attend this year’s Global Maritime Forum Annual Summit, taking place 15-17 October in Tokyo.
Dominguez will join some 220 C-suite leaders from the maritime sector and beyond to address some of the industry’s most pressing issues across two and a half days of workshop-style discussions. The agenda includes planned sessions on strategies to meet the IMO’s more ambitious emissions reduction trajectories, how to improve working conditions at sea, addressing gaps in marine insurance coverage, ship recycling, digitalisation, and maritime governance, among others.
“The maritime sector is undergoing transformation to meet the targets set in the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy and as automation and digitalisation reshape shipping operations. The Global Maritime Forum Annual Summit welcomes engaging discussions on how the sector must continue to deliver global trade safely and sustainably, and I look forward to sharing updates on the latest developments at the IMO,”Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General at the International Maritime Organization.
Dominguez will join global shipping executives, industry experts, NGOs, and other regulators in the solutions-focused working sessions that are the hallmark of the Annual Summit.
“We welcome the Secretary-General’s decision to participate in this year’s Annual Summit. The IMO plays a pivotal role in setting the pace and scale of maritime decarbonisation, in securing the safety of seafarers, and the future of how the international shipping is governed, so his perspective will be invaluable to the discussions,” Global Maritime Forum CEO Johannah Christensen said.
The Global Maritime Forum Annual Summit encourages participants to work in groups to seek collaborative responses to the industry’s various challenges. The working sessions are supplemented by briefings with leading experts, a few keynote sessions, and panel discussions featuring top government officials and business leaders.
The Annual Summit convenes key decision-makers from around the world in a different maritime capital each year, but the discussions don’t stop there. The Summit has helped launch several highly regarded industry initiatives, including the Getting to Zero Coalition, the All-Aboard Alliance, and the Poseidon Principles.
