India and the United Kingdom have signed a ‘Statement of Intent’ (SoI) aimed at enhancing cooperation in the joint design, development, and production of electric propulsion systems for the Indian Navy’s warships.
The agreement was formalized in Portsmouth during the third meeting of the joint working group under the electric propulsion capability partnership. This collaboration highlights both nations’ commitment to advancing indigenous technology development in the defense sector, according to the Ministry of Defence.
The SoI is intended to serve as a broader framework for the electric propulsion systems of future naval vessels, including Landing Platform Docks (LPDs), which are large amphibious warfare ships. These vessels, set to be built in Indian shipyards, are planned to incorporate full electric propulsion systems, marking a significant step in India’s naval modernization efforts.
