Manuskh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of State for Shipping of India launched the online exit examinations for seafarers while addressing a virtual ceremony on Friday, 7th Aug 2020.
Seafarers receiving training from different Marine Institutes under Directorate General of Shipping can now avail the option of writing exams from their homes. This move aims to accommodate the needs of Indian seafarers, who constitute a huge working force. Mandaviya said that the target was to “prepare 5 lakh seafarers”. As of 2019, the number of Indian seafarers stands at 2.34 lakhs.
The current training for modular courses is in a three-tier system. This constitutes e-learning platforms, virtual classrooms by training institutes, and now, the online exit examinations.
The virtual ceremony was attended by the Secretary Shipping, Sanjeev Ranjan, senior officials of the ministry, officers from the DG Shipping, Maritime Institutes and training seafarers as well. Amitabh Kumar, the Director-General Shipping, too spoke well of the examinations stating that the enhanced security facilities enabled examination to be taken from home “with zero possibility of misconduct.”
Mandaviya commented that India is known for its skilled and quality seafarers and placed importance of their needs, especially during the times of a pandemic. He also added that the online exam provided accuracy and uniformity of assessments that candidates could be assured of.
The minister also spoke about how this works towards the vision of Shri Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister’s that seeks to generate employment opportunities for the maritime sector among the youth.
