Major Indian airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and Vistara, have begun canceling flights to Dhaka due to escalating unrest in the Bangladeshi capital. Dhaka’s airport was closed for several hours after 5 pm on Monday as conditions worsened. An IndiGo flight from Dhaka to Kolkata (6E 1106) managed to depart around 5 pm before the closure.
Air India announced: “In view of the emerging situation in Bangladesh, we have cancelled the scheduled operation of our flights to and from Dhaka with immediate effect. We are continuously monitoring the situation and are extending support to our passengers with confirmed bookings for travel to and from Dhaka with a one-time waiver on rescheduling and cancellation charges. Safety of our guests and crew remains our foremost priority.”
IndiGo stated: “In view of the ongoing situation in Dhaka, all flights scheduled for (Aug 6) have unfortunately been cancelled. We understand that this may cause significant inconvenience and disruption to your travel plans and we sincerely regret this development.”
Vistara has canceled its flights to Dhaka from Delhi and Mumbai for Tuesday.
Air India Express had recently planned to introduce six weekly flights between Kolkata & Chennai and Dhaka starting next month, but it remains uncertain if these flights will proceed.
